Speakers, especially those who consider speaking as their profession, should remember that it is important to appear educated, dedicated, and credible to the audience. Poor diction decreases the speaker’s prestige, and the message of the speech will not come across to the audience. One way to achieve this is to have an excellent diction when delivering a speech. This can be attained by mastering the art of articulation and enunciation. How does the two differ?

Articulation is how well a speaker put the vowels and consonants together and how the sounds pass through the lips and mouth. It is manipulating the sounds coming from the vocal folds by using recognizable patterns in moving the teeth, tongue, lips, and other speech organs. Enunciation is the distinctness of the words uttered by the speaker. Having a good enunciation means words are clearly formed and easily recognized.

There are free articulation and enunciation drills that can be accessed online. These exercises offer passages that practice the speech organs, ways to improve breathing, and methods to relax the speech muscles. It is also advisable to practice reading and recording passages with a learning partner or tutor. Through constant practice, speakers can have an excellent diction and be an effective communicator of ideas.
